Executive Summary
The Gloucester Heritage URC commissioned the Museum of London Archaeology Service to carry out an archaeological desk-based assessment of proposed development of five key sites in the City of Gloucester. The five sites have been identified for regeneration in the Area Regeneration Framework (July 2006).
Please note the following PDF files are fairly large and may take a longer than usual to download. They comprise:
> Kings Square and the Bus Station (7.9mb)
> Blackfriars / Westgate Quay (11.8mb)
> The Docks (8.2mb)
> The Railway Triangle (23.5mb)
> The Canal Corridor (16.6mb)
The aim of the study was to assist the Gloucester Heritage URC and the City of Gloucester authority to deliver their regeneration strategy. The two end users comprise masterplanners, who will use the study as part of heritage-led regeneration strategy, and the City of Gloucester Historic Environment team, who will gain an enhanced Historic Environment Record (HER) dataset which will assist the management of the cultural heritage resources.
The scope of the study was essentially to provide an enhancement of the HER through desk-based assessment, to identify known and potential archaeological and built heritage resources within each of the five regeneration Sites, and to assess the survival and significance of these resources.
As the project is intended to inform the masterplanning process rather than succeed it, it does not include a detailed assessment of the archaeological and built heritage implications of any future development proposals. It was outside the remit of the project to provide recommendations for archaeological evaluation or mitigation.
Limited hard copies of the each of the five sites studied is available at a small cost. Please contact the Office Manager if you would like purchase one or all of these documents.
