Greyfriars

Overview

Greyfriars provides the opportunity for an exemplar housing-led scheme in the heart of the city centre. The former Gloscat sites are being developed by Linden Homes and will become an attractive city centre residential neighbourhood, providing up-to 400 new homes and apartments in a mix of styles and sizes. It will be an exemplar of modern city centre living, complete with easy access to shops, community services and employment opportunities.

Public spaces located around the ruins of Greyfriars Priory and other nearby historic buildings will provide shoppers, tourists and residents alike with a restful haven in the centre of the city.

Site description

The majority of this 2.4 hectare city centre site is currently occupied by the former Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology buildings which fronts onto Brunswick Road.

Former Gloscat main site and former media studies centre.

Homes and Communities Agency announced Linden Homes as development partner for the Greyfriars development January 2009. The development programme involves the Homes and Community Agency and Linden Homes submitting a detailed planning application for the entire Greyfriars scheme by January 2010, although it may be possible to bring this forward

Linden Homes made presentations of the concept vision design principles being considered to the Business, Residents & Community forums and main Board in July 2009

A 12 weeks programme of community consultation took place from 7th September to 30th November 2009 and  included exhibitions in libraries, shopping centres, online information and comment facility on the GHURC website, published literature via the ‘Regeneration News’ and extensive use of the mobile exhibition unit at various locations around the city.  

With over 400 questionnaire responses received. Final detailed design proposals are now being developed by Feilden Clegg Bradley. These respond to consultation comments and Design Review Panel assessments in Dec 2009 & Jan 2010
