A massive regeneration programme is now creating a new chapter in the history of Gloucester, building upon its world-class heritage and releasing its potential as a city for the 21st century.
The Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company Ltd (GHURC) is responsible for this renaissance and for the attraction of £1billion of private sector investment to the city in the next ten years.
Thirteen secondary school students from Gloucester recently visited the waterfront city of Drammen in Norway in order to study its regeneration and learn lessons for the renewal of Gloucester.
On the 16th July, a group of 16 representatives from the GHURC’s Community and Business fora, Design Panel and Board of Directors undertook a Best Practice study tour of Dublin’s Temple Bar.
The first phase of the £250m Gloucester Quays scheme is nearing completion. The Designer Outlet Centre, a Sainsbury’s foodstore and a Travelodge hotel are all due to open next spring and they will be connected by a new bridge and road link over the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal that will greatly improve Gloucester’s road infrastructure.
The draft Greater Blackfriars Masterplan has been approved by the GHURC Board and it will now be used as the basis for an extensive public consultation exercise.
The transformation of the city centre has taken a step forward following the appointment of Niall McLaughlin with Churcham Architects as winners of the Kings Square International Design Competition.
People and projectsBailey Hill, recent winner of the Miss Gloucester competition, has offered to help promote the regeneration of Gloucester.
Graham Walker has been appointed as the first Chief Executive of Marketing Gloucester Ltd, the new public/private sector partnership established to drive forward the promotion of the city.
Youth get smart and film their future
Young People interested in working in film and media could get their first break in Gloucester on the 4th October thanks to a new initiative from Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, Gloucestershire College and Blue Sky Event & Media production company.
Regeneration led Initiative encourages new Docks friendships
Residents in Gloucester Docks are getting to know each other for the first time thanks to a Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company. The initiative encourages local people to get involved in the city’s regeneration by expressing their opinions through Community Ambassadors.
