Greyfriars

Sustainable living in the heart of the city.

The Greyfriars area will become an attractive city centre residential neighbourhood, providing over 400 new homes and apartments in a mix of styles and sizes. It will be an exemplar of modern city centre living, complete with easy access to shops, community services and employment opportunities.

Public spaces located around the ruins of Greyfriars Priory and other nearby historic buildings will provide shoppers, tourists and residents alike with a restful haven in the centre of the city.

  • 1,000 sq m commercial floorspace

I agree with Karran regarding how the houses will be promoted. I think some shared ownership will be good as it will mean young people and families can buy new house on a 50- per cent basis. The worry is that to many houses will be given on a rent free basis thus bringing no income into the city. The people in charge of this project must be prepared to make some hard decisions as this I feel is Gloucesters last opportunity to progress. Gloucester needs to attract young professional people with high incomes if this is to suceed. Money makes money and the more money that comes into an area the better. Examples of this are Castlefield in Manchester, Bristol Docks and Cardiff Docks. All these areas are vibrant, trendy and all have one thing in common which is they attract the right kind of people. The question is has Gloucester got these young professional people we are after or do they want to live in Cheltenham

Reading about a 'neighbourhood office', and one of the two partners being a 'housing association'.....I have seen it in other cities where these areas soon become run down; any owner occupiers quickly see the writing on the wall and move out leaving a getto occupied by council and private tenants only. I really hope this area does not end up as one big 'council estate'...resulting in yet another 'no go area' in Gloucester! Please try and avoid this!!

"We’re now ready to forge ahead with our plans for a high-quality neighbourhood that will bring considerable social and environmental benefits to the heart of Gloucester.”

Bristol-based house builder, Edward Ware Homes Ltd, has been appointed to develop the Greyfriars site on Brunswick Rd, Gloucester, bringing almost four hundred new homes to the city centre and setting new standards.
